Now, at the edge of Twillingate, we visit Cap'n Dave's Prime Berth Museum . A history of the cod fishery, with plenty of local artifacts and a fishing stage. |

Okay, now we're on to the centrepiece of our trip: Fogo Island. Where Norman's
dad Oscar was stationed during the war, at a radar base near the town of Tilting

Norman has already connected with a local historian, Jim McGrath, who has lived here much of his life, and knows the history of Tilting and the radar station inside out. |

Norman on the foundation of the Radar Station (though the locals were told,
"Oh, it's a Weather Station"
"Yeah, okay, a weather station. If that's what you want to call it, sure, we'll go along with that, eh.") |

This is all that remains of the WWII Radar station and the Air Force buildings that sprang up in the area round Sandy's Cove. |

Norman and Susan with the obligatory High Point photo (we've been doing this
since 1990). And it
is
high, since this is where they built the station.
It's also just down the road from Greene Point, the location in North America that is closest to Europe. (not the furthest east...that's at Cape Spear) Map of Fogo Island |

And Jim had a picture of Oscar, at the base. Norman is overwhelmed. |

Jim continues to give us a tour of Tilting and the base area. Here is the only building still remaining in place on the base (the land now returned to the McGraths). It's now an artist's residence studio. |

Another building used by the Air Force, now bought and towed to Jim's uncle's place, as a sheep shed. |

Local artisan postscript. While stationed at Tilting, Oscar designed this pattern, then he commissioned a local woman to create it for him. It's been hanging at the cottage forever. We're still trying to track down the artisan. Perhaps through the artisan's guild and the legendary rug hooker, Lillian Dwyer. |

Now, we move on to the tour of the old Museums of Tilting, in this case the
Post Office Museum and the Lane House, both depicted here in Miniature.

now, to the Winds and Waves Artisan's Guild, near the towns of Barr'd Islands
and Joe Batt's Arm.
Oh, what's that strange structure in the foggy distance? A ship? A factory? |

Ah, it's the Fogo Island Inn. We'll not be staying there, at $1000-$2500 a night. I try to book a tour while we're here, but there's a BIG wedding on, and they can't do tours this week. |
